[Southern Reach] When a Rabbit is Not a Rabbit

By Kedbreak136 on July 19, 2026 11:38 am

I have nothing against rabbits. I would even say that some of my best friends are Rabbits. However, I have to object to the lagomorphs featured in the 4th book of the Southern Reach series.
When a rabbit is not arbbit
When you are a biologist in a Florida swamp, under heavy rain and come head to heady with a white rabbit munching on crabs. Systematically stomping on them, breaking them apart, eating them.

And this is is just the start. It really goes downhill from there. And when I say downhill, I mean that once it has reached the bottom of the hill, it starts digging and does not take a break until it has reached the iron core of the planet.
The music actually follows the summary of the story, but you'll have to read Absolution for this.

Overall, I liked that I had an idea of this track with the cracking sounds but the result is not up to what I wanted to do. It's a bit busy but not in a good way and the mix is mushy. But I don't have more time on Sunday night, so let me submit this one. It'll do.

Creepy chewy sounds, and nice details in the background instruments / buildup! I could follow the buildup of the tension until at some point I was seeing flamethrowers being put into action against these rabbits... Then I guess the rain came, the reverse-drop "dropped", and the same rain that felt anxious at the start felt serene. Nice cinematic piece once again! Cool book rec, might check it out!

I'm not too far from the everglades so this def has a frightening feel to it yikes
Whatever I'm armed with... is not powerful enough for whatever floppy eared beast is out in the rain. The rain gave me some Jurassic Park rain feels yikes  Excellent work!

I think this rabbit may call for some holy hand grenades.  This Southern Reach inspired series you have been doing has been fun and terrifying, much like what I remember of the books.  The crunching sounds are intense.  I'll have to read the fourth one, but I probably need to refresh my memory a bit on the first three.

Haunting...
Nice hellish soundscape.
Hope you'll find your way outside Zone X.

Dark and a bit scrary...

Super.

uhhh, i'm scared, but in a good way? that was a hell of a track! thanks for the ost for future dreams
